Whippet Breed Notes 21st October 2026

The Midland Whippet Club held their Championship Show on Sunday 18th October at the usual venue of the Sports Connexion, Ryton On Dunsmore outside Coventry. Both the judges were breed specialists, Jan Doherty (Littlebriton) for the dogs and Mark Smith for the bitches. There was an entry of 225, split with 88 males and 137 bitches, with 49 entries absent on the day, 17 dogs and 32 bitches.

Anne Defaye was the Referee. The judging was staggered, with bitches starting at 9.30am with the judging of dogs starting at 10.00am.

BIS and BCC winner was Tervanty Dragon Song at Palmik JW, owned by Yvonne Hull and Mike Howgate. This was her third Challenge Certificate and hence is the second “Dragon” to take their UK title. This was to be the Palmik Kennel’s 100th Challenge Certificate in the breed- a milestone achievement! Congratulations to Mike, Yvonne and breeder Liz Woodward! RBIS and taking the RBCC, was Ch Crosscop Temptation to Supeta, owned by Leigh Morris, George Waddell, Fiona Spademan and Sue Mycroft. BOS, winning his second DCC on the day, was Marcia Dillon’s Citycroft Not My First Rodeo at Runforest JW from Post Graduate. Jan Willem Akerboom’s, Kris Van Der Schaaf’s and Mrs C Perkins’s Creme Anglaise’s Time to Shine was BPIS and BPB. Vanessa and John Turnbull’s Ch Ticks The Boxes at Turnstone was BVIS and BVD. Mrs E Partridge’s Ohoka Top Tuppence was BSPBIS.

The RDCC went to Lynn Yacoby Wright’s Ch Cobyco Catch Your Eye who headed the Open class.  Litter brother to the BPIS, Creme Anglaise’s Time Traveller to Silkridge Imp NLD was RBPIS, owned by Kris and Mrs C Perkins. BVB was David and Yvette Short’s Ch Collooney Dita Von Tease. Ms S De Graffham’s Cleeton We Go Together at Firesprite was Best Special Beginner Dog. Anne was called in to judge Best Puppy as Jan wished to withdraw due to her longstanding friendship with Jan Willem and Kris.

Judging was over by the mid afternoon, looking at the time Di Bowsher was posting her videos of the Challenges, for which all at home and abroad are very grateful to her. The hall looked a little empty by the end, but there were still enough onlookers to give the principal winners a good round of applause. Congratulations to all in the cards at what must be one of the very popular Club Shows and another new Champion for the breed.

What a pity that Anne had to post on social media a little later, that the show manager was outside picking up a number of dog messes left by exhibitors!

Excellent news from Katie Manners, who posted on line the result of the recent online auctions held to raise monies for the Sarah Pirie Whippet Heart Fund. A total of £1721 was raised with all unsold items going on the JR Whippet Rescue eBay site. A great result for such a worthy cause.

The Our Dogs Top Dog Table has recently been updated. Ch Ranveli Diki Diki is now Top Whippet with 59 points and is ranked second in the entire Hound Group. Congratulations!

Rhiannon Thomas, Secretary of the Anglesey CS, has asked to share the following via the Notes. The CS are holding their Limited Show on the 14th November and there are Whippet classes scheduled. Several have already entered, but there is still time to enter on line. Kim Lathaen has very kindly donated one of her pyrography (wood burning) portraits, which normally cost £75, for the special raffle to be held on the day. Tickets are £5 and will be sold at the show. Any queries can be answered by contacting Rhiannon via email angleseysecretary@gmail.com.
