I apologise for the delay in sending this. As always, time has crept up quicker than I thought. I do continue to progress things whilst balancing a busy work and family life. During the latter part of 2024, the Kennel Club produced a ‘Population Analysis’ for each breed. This report included trends in registrations, estimates in the loss of genetic diversity, statistics and trends in litter sizes and characteristics of sires. These results are designed to form a basis for discussion within each breed. The aim is to form strategies for the long term sustainability of breed populations.
They asked that a focus group be put together and feedback be provided to them. I worked with my health sub-committee and submitted the feedback that we agreed upon as a group. The KC extended the deadline for submissions until the end of February and they stated that;
“In March, we will collate the feedback and begin organising a series of themed meetings for Breed Health CoOrdinators. These meetings will include guided discussions while giving you the opportunity to share challenges and propose ideas or possible solutions. Based on these discussions, we will regroup internally to define key goals and potential next steps. Given the unique circumstances of each breed, strategy plans for managing genetic diversity will be led by the breed communities with our support and guidance.”
I haven’t heard anything further to date but will update when I do.
So far in 2025 there have been group heart testing sessions held at both SWWC and SYWC in February. The former had 59 dogs tested with approximately 19% recorded to have a murmur. I believe 36 dogs were tested at SYWC – I am yet to receive the results but have chased up the cardiologist in the last few days. I would be keen from any club willing to host another session this year please. As stated before, private testing continues to rise in price and these group sessions are invaluable.
A year ago I set up the Health Fund and have done several raffles to raise funds. At the time of launch I asked every club to ask how they could contribute financially. I’m sorry to say that I’ve not had any response at all to this, which is really disappointing. I know everyone is so busy, but I really ask that you could put this on your agenda to discuss at your next meeting. I won’t repeat the comments that I made last year, but they will be available to look back on with ways in which you might be able to help. It is impossible to pursue research, look at a genetic marker for PS etc without funds.
