JR Whippet Rescue has been helping whippets in need for over 50 years.

JR Whippet Rescue have been helping Whippets in need for over 50 years. The rescue was founded in 1971 by Joanna Russell, hence JR, when she realised there was a need to re-home Whippets when there was a change in owners’ circumstances. Joanna sadly passed away in 2016 but the charity was continued by other passionate Whippet people. To this day JRWR is supported by the hard work, dedication and generosity of Whippet lovers who give their time, and frequently, their money in a voluntary capacity.

JRWR has a Board of Trustees chaired currently by Mrs Kate Bent. The day to day running of the charity consists of Lisa Samson – Relinquishing Rehoming Coordinator, Katie McDonald – Adoption Request Coordinator, Sally Ashwell – Finance Manager, Rose Hutton – Online Shop and Stalls Organiser, Sarah Mills – Website and the team of Volunteers who help out with transporting and home checking.

Facing the heart-breaking decision to rehome your Whippet is never easy, but thankfully JR Whippet Rescue can be there to help you. JRWR currently help and support hundreds of Whippets each year.

Some of the reasons Whippets may end up in rescue are:

  • Behavioural problems, such as Reactivity, Separation Anxiety, Sleep Startle and Resource Guarding.
  • Littermate Syndrome.
  • Relationship Breakdowns.
  • Birth of a baby and the dog not coping with the new arrival.
  • Owners buying a puppy/taking on an older dog and not realising the commitment required to look after them correctly.
  • Elderly owners taking on young dogs that they can’t cope with.
  • Lack of basic training causing the dog to be unmanageable.
  • Owner illness or death.
  • Financial hardship.
  • Unclaimed strays from the pound.
