Manchester started the year with RKC assessments taking place. Unfortunately, only one of the four candidates passed but the other three candidates are not put off and looking to take the assessment again or trying the old route before the cut-off at the end of the year. It was agreed this assessment at the end of the showing day was not conducive to candidate being in the right frame of mind and it would be far better to be a stand-alone event.
There are now four more people who have been observed and I’m just waiting for them to complete their stewarding in order to arrange another RKC assessment. I cannot stress enough how important it is to get your stewarding appointments done.
It is now possible for everyone to upload their JEP achievements directly onto their RKC account. Go to manage account, on the left-hand side you will see a heading TASKS, click on Judges Education Program and follow the instructions. Even I can do it!!
There are some ‘new’ judges are asking for mentoring sessions and I have found that some people have no idea how to get mentoring sessions so please if you are asked about mentoring pass on my details so that we can get even more breed specialist on the ladder. It does not have to be at a CH show or a breed club show, mentoring can take place at an all breeds open show if there are enough exhibits. A few exhibitors have requested informal sessions so that they can see for themselves if judging might be something they wish to pursue.
I would ask all clubs to consult the ADVISORY CRITERIA FOR THE COMPILATION OF BREED CLUB JUDGES LISTS FRAMEWORK DOCUMENT. The link to which can be found below:
https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/media/3382/advisory-critieria.pdf
If all clubs had the same criteria for their individual lists there would be some new breed judges who could be passed ‘Grandfathering’ but only until the end of 2025. I am assuming that the RKC will be taking control of the lists in 2026 anyway.
I have been asked by many clubs for lists of people who are JEP level 2 or B list.
I am happy to provide names to them but very disappointed to hear that some of the names that I put forward are very rude and do not reply to requests. This is unacceptable. If you have taken BAD/MCE but feel that judging is not for you, please let me know as it will save both time and effort for me and the societies secretaries who have enough to deal with. Coupled with that if you have accepted an appointment can you let me know when and where just so that I don’t give out the same names to clubs in the same area.
Once again it is the ’all-rounders’ who seem to be willing to be mentored and want to pursue the JEP and the general open show societies are desperate to put up breed specialist to judge Whippets but I haven’t got enough breed judges to fulfil demand.
BAD/MCE in 2025
Northern Counties and Whippet Club of Scotland are holding one on the 22nd March
SYWC 13th July with A3 assessment
WCOW and SWWC 5th October TBC
I must thank all the mentors, observers and breed speakers for their time and enthusiasm to ensure that the breed continues to move forward with the times. Some mentors have let me know which shows they will be attending and it would be very helpful and appreciated if other mentors could do the same. Likewise if you want mentoring please let me know at which shows you are attending, preferably not the day before!
