Dog Showing is a hobby and a sport. It is fun and it is enjoyable. It can also be highly competitive, demanding your time and your finances, and bringing together all sorts of people from all different walks of life. It is diverse, and participation in it sees people of all ages and abilities standing in a ring together all hoping for the same outcome.
Being involved in this world of dog shows can bring you into contact with people who will become your very good friends and who support you in times of need. Just like anything in life, it can also bring you into contact with people opposite to the above. In any competitive situation, there can be challenges, rivalries and misunderstandings. It brings out the very best in people and it can also bring out the very worst too. The best dog on the day is the opinion of the judge on that day and fortunately for us all, there is more than one judge and more than one day.
Accept the opinion of the judge on the day – you chose to enter under them. Win with grace, lose with dignity, and treat people with respect and kindness. We don’t have to be friends with everyone but we can be friendly or at the very least polite.
Dog shows can be like a beautiful bed of roses but do be prepared every so often to get pricked by a thorn
